In his message for the 54th World Communications Day, Pope Francis focuses on storytelling and “the truth contained in good stories. Stories that build up, not tear down; stories that help us rediscover our roots and the strength needed to move forward together” (1).
Pope Francis refers to Sacred Scripture as the “Story of stories” and the Bible as the “great love story between God and humanity” (3). We gather as a community to hear these stories proclaimed at Sunday Mass. While many of us continue to wait and long for a return to in-person Sunday Mass, we view live streams or recordings of Mass. We hear the Word of God proclaimed in the readings and broken open for us in the Homily. This Word is food for our souls and nourishes us as we await the day when we may also receive the Word of God—Jesus Christ—body, blood, soul, and divinity in Holy Communion.
May this time of waiting help us all tune in with open ears and hearts to the “great love story” that will give us “the strength needed to move forward together.”
