In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus sent his disciples to every town to spread his message. This makes me think about my own life of ministry. When did I receive that calling? How did I realize that Jesus was asking me to bring his message of love to others?
When I was 14 years old, I saw that my parish in Mexico was in great need of catechists to bring the Word of God to small children. So I convinced a good friend of mine to attend a catechist training course organized by the Sisters of the Congregation of the Corde Jesu. We were very young, but the Sisters were desperate and saw that we were serious about it, so they assigned us to a group of young children.
After working with children for a few years, I became part of the leadership team for the youth ministry in my parish and diocese. A young person’s heart is set on fire when they encounter Christ, and there is nothing more rewarding than facilitating that encounter. Working hand in hand with my bishop, my pastor, and my brothers and sisters in bringing Jesus message to others is a privilege that marked my youth in a wonderful way.
As an adult, my ministry has been focused on children, as a catechist and Catholic school teacher, as well as in my work as Bilingual Editor for Pflaum.
When did you receive your call to discipleship? Please share your experience with us in the comment section.
Dear God, pour your blessings upon all of us, your disciples, as we rest and recharge our energy to start another year of faith formation in our parishes. Amen.
