Both the First Reading and Gospel for this Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time are about providing hospitality to visitors. In the Gospel, the visitor is Jesus, and the hostesses are Mary and Martha. Read Alice Camille’s reflection on Sunday’s Gospel below. In the First Reading from the Book of Genesis, we hear of Abraham and Sarah providing water and food to refresh three strangers on a hot day. The reward for Abraham and Sarah’s hospitality is the promise that they will have a son within the coming year.
Whether we are the hosts or visitors, there are blessings and enjoyment to share when people get together. Being gracious and kind to another often bounces graciousness and kindness back to us. In this world where there are so many divisions and conflicts, let us remember to show we are Christians by our love.
