On Tuesday of this week, we celebrate the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This event in Jesus’ life is also shared in the Gospel for the Second Sunday of Lent every year. Something that always strikes me when I hear or read this Gospel is Peter’s reaction: “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Peter wanted to hold on to this mountaintop experience and build dwelling places for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah.

Aren’t we all like Peter sometimes? We have a mountaintop experience and want to stay there. We don’t want to drop back down into the valleys and plains of life. But just like Peter when he saw that Moses and Elijah were no longer there, we need to face reality. Mountaintop experiences aren’t meant to last, and neither are our times in the valley. Jesus gives Peter, James, and John a glimpse of his glory so that when the Cross comes, they will not lose heart. Our mountaintop experiences give us hope for better days when we are in the valleys of our lives.
