In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus is transfigured to show God’s glory. The three Apostles who accompany Jesus up the mountain see him in his resurrected glory. They hear God the Father claim Jesus as his beloved Son and tell them to listen to him. May we each find time this Lent to quiet ourselves and listen for the many ways Jesus is speaking to us.

Every week in the GROW newsletter, you will find helpful tips for teaching your Gospel Weeklies lesson, a reflection on the Sunday Gospel, and links to online resources.

Seeds
Lesson Theme: Jesus is God’s Son.
For this lesson, you will need images or statues of Mary and Jesus, crayons, markers, scissors, and a Church Year calendar.

Transfiguration is a big word for little children. What they can understand is that Jesus was so close to God in love that he showed it all over. Jesus’ body showed us the beauty of loving God, just as flowers and butterflies show us God’s beauty and love for us. Seeds emphasizes growing and changing as signs of God’s life in us. The students will appreciate how much they have changed since they were little. They will learn how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly and will make a paper butterfly. We suggest you have at least one aide to assist the children with this activity.

Promise
Lesson Theme: God tells us to listen to Jesus.
For this lesson, gather scissors, glue sticks, crayons, pencils, a world map or globe, and a Church Year calendar. You may wish to arrange for an aide or aides to help with cutting and gluing. We suggest that you separate pages 1–2 and 3–4 in advance.

To prepare the children to learn about Jesus’ change of appearance in the Gospel, catechists and teachers will invite them to recognize growth and change in nature. The children will consider how they listen to Jesus. They will be invited to recall another time that God the Father spoke from a cloud—Jesus’ baptism. On that occasion, the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove. The children will name the Three Persons of the Holy Trinity. They will connect the Trinity to the words of Baptism and the Sign of the Cross. They will be introduced to the Glory Be to the Father prayer.

Good News
Lesson Theme: God tells us to listen to and follow Jesus.
For this lesson, gather a globe or world map, a rosary, scissors, tape, pencils, crayons, a Church Year calendar, and copies of the Act of Hope (one per child, see page 50 in the Catechism handbook).

Good News children will identify prayer as an action of Jesus’ followers and will be introduced to Abraham and Sarah as the first followers of God. They will identify Lent as a time for prayer and be introduced to different ways to pray. As they share the Gospel, they will recognize the Transfiguration of Jesus as giving us a view of God’s glory. They will be introduced to the words Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension, and Pentecost and the events these words refer to. They will learn the Act of Hope.

Venture
Lesson Theme: God tells us to listen to and follow Jesus.
For this lesson, gather pens or pencils, Bibles (one per pair or group of three), simple props and costumes for the play-drama (optional), and a Liturgical Year calendar.

This Sunday’s Gospel of the Transfiguration reveals both Jesus’ future and our own. This Gospel Reading sets our eyes on Easter as Simon Peter, James, and John glimpse the Risen Jesus for a passing moment. Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem, where he knows he will suffer and die. He will not avoid a painful human death, but he will become the life-giving Risen Christ. Lent invites us to join Jesus on his journey. We begin that journey with our Baptism. The Living the Gospel feature (pages 6–7) helps the children see how they can help others on the journey of faith that may lead to Baptism and membership in the Body of Christ.

During Lent, the Our Catholic Faith feature (page 5) focuses on topics and characters from Old Testament history. The featured saint this week is Saint André of Montreal. As the children read about his life, invite them to find ways that he listened to and followed Jesus.

During Lent, the Our Catholic Faith feature (page 5) focuses on topics and characters from Old Testament history. The featured Catholic Leader this week is Servant of God Sister Clare Crockett. As the children read about her life, invite them to identify ways that she tuned into and responded to God’s presence and call within her short life.
