Epiphany: Matthew 2:1–12
Baptism of the Lord: Mark 1:7–11
On Epiphany, a word that means “manifestation,” Jesus was revealed as far more than the king of the Jews. Matthew’s story of the visit of the Magi from the East makes it clear that Jesus came for all people who seek God. Then for the Baptism of the Lord, John Baptist points to Jesus as one who is coming after him who is much greater than him. Of Jesus, John said, “I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandals.” Jesus comes to John to be baptized in the Jordan River. When he comes up out of the water, the Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove and the Father speaks from Heaven. God the Father is pleased with his beloved Son.
