Some people know the day before Ash Wednesday as Shrovetide or Pancake Day. Many others celebrate Mardi Gras, which is French for “Fat Tuesday.” The idea behind these celebrations is similar—a final indulgence before the austerity, abstinence, and fasting that Catholics observe during Lent. Share Just Before Lent with your families.
On Ash Wednesday, Catholics begin the forty-day observance of Lent—a contemplative season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving in preparation for our liturgical observances of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus. This year, Ash Wednesday falls on February 22.
