The final verse in Sunday’s Gospel “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35) is undoubtedly the inspiration for the song “They’ll Know We Are Christians.” I grew up singing this song in my Indiana parish in the 70s, and our parish’s music ministry still pulls it out on occasion. The message is a good reminder and a challenge: We are to put God’s love into action in our lives. We are to be sacraments—signs of God’s grace, love, presence, and friendship—to all those we encounter.
Good and gracious God, help us to be your Body and the face and hands of your love in a world that sorely needs you and the hope your promises bring. Amen.
