When I celebrated my First Communion, my parents gave me a brand-new New Testament. I recall feeling so important and grown-up because, for the first time, I had a New Testament without children’s illustrations. I vividly remember sitting down in the living room and opening my New Testament at random. I read the story of John the Baptist presenting Jesus, the Lamb of God. There is one statement that struck me to the point that, forty years later, it is the first thing that comes to mind whenever I think about Jesus’ cousin: “[There is one] who is coming after me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to untie” (John 1:27).

On June 24, the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist and, of course, the first thing that comes to mind is that verse from John’s Gospel. Today, I pray that we have John the Baptist’s courage to announce the coming of Jesus Christ, the humility that he showed when he recognized that he was not worthy to even untie his sandals, and the faithfulness to testify his Good News until our last breath.
