World Mission Sunday: “Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet”

When I was a little girl growing up in Mexico, I remember that once a year, the Columban Missionaries would come to my Catholic school to talk to us about their work in different countries around the world. They also told us stories about missionary saints, like Saint Marianne Cope who worked with people suffering from leprosy in Hawaii. You may find more information about Saint Marianne here.

This Sunday, October 20, the Catholic Church celebrates World Mission Sunday with the theme “Go and invite everyone to the banquet” (Matthew 22:9). In his Message for World Mission Day 2024, Pope Francis writes: “[B]reaking our material bread with the hungry in the name of Christ is already a work of Christian mission. How much more so is the breaking of the Eucharistic bread, which is Christ himself, a work of mission par excellence, since the Eucharist is the source and summit of the life and mission of the Church.”

Let us respond to our baptismal call to “go and invite” everyone we meet to the banquet of the Lord. Amen.
