“. . . you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church . . .” –Matthew 16:18
Peter is the rock. And St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is an absolute rock star when it comes to the churches of the world.
A testament to this great Apostle, it took more than 100 years to build, being completed in 1626. It is a monument. But, no matter the grandiosity of it, it is still a manmade structure. The real church IS the Church . . . we make up the Catholic Church. As beautiful as our church buildings may be, we are ultimately meant to leave the church and spread the Gospel.
At the conclusion of every Mass, we are told to “Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord” or “Go in peace glorifying the Lord by your life.” Let us pray that we may actually do that. Can we live our life so there is no doubt that we have an unshakeable foundation? May we follow the example of Peter and courageously help to build the Church.
Can people tell by your actions that you are Catholic?
While The Gospel at Home takes a break in the summer months, we’ll be drawing our weekly reflections from Exploring the Sunday Readings.
