I love the month of May! It is not only the month that the Catholic Church dedicates to Mary, Our Mother, but May is also the month when many children receive the Blood and Body of Christ for the first time. Last Saturday, more than thirty children received their First Communion at our parish in Michigan. My great-nephew was among them. They looked so eager and happy, wearing their very best clothes. And then, when the moment came and they received their First Communion, their little faces were beaming as they came back to their pews to give thanks to the Lord. When I congratulated my great-nephew after Mass, he said, “I can’t wait until tomorrow to receive my second Communion!”

All Catholics should keep the same awe and unparalleled joy a child experiences when receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus for the first time. Can you imagine what a church full of people praying with the same faith and devotion as little children would look like?

Let us ask God to help us remember that when we approach the altar to receive Communion, we are receiving the very flesh and blood of his Beloved Son.
