SOWING THE GOSPELThe Pflaum Gospel Weeklies share the vision of the General Directory for Catechesis (GDC) that Jesus’ parable of the sower (Mark 4 1-8) inspires the Church’s mission of evangelization and catechesis The sower in the parable is Jesus Christ The seed is the Word of God The field is the world (GDC #15) Jesus proclaimed his Gospelin Palestine 2,000 years ago and sent disciples to sow the Good News of God’s forgiving, healing, life-giving love in the world Today, the Holy Spirit animates ministers of the Word— preachers, parents, teachers, and catechists—to continue this sowing in the good ground of Christians’ lives and through them in the field of the world This catechesis encourages—l a living experience of our creative, compassionate God who loves us into being like a parent;l a rediscovery of Jesus as both God’s beloved Sonand our wholeheartedly self- giving brother;l a responsiveness to the Spirit, who animates our lives and urges us to co-responsibility for the Church’s mission in the world;l a raised consciousness that recognizes the dutiesof social justice that accompany faith (GDC #24) 2In the parable of the sower, Jesus tells us some seed never sprouts, some withers, some gets choked out by weeds. But he promises, too, that some seed falls on good ground and yields thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold. The purpose of the liturgical catechesis- approach of the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies is to help catechists sow Jesus’ Good News in the good ground of young people’s lives. The Pflaum Gospel Weeklies also share the vision of the National Directory for Catechesis (NDC) that “Jesus Christis the energizing centerof evangelization and the heart of catechesis. Christ, the first evangelizer,is himself the GoodNews who proclaimsthe Kingdom of God and accomplishes the salvation of all by his redemptive suffering, death, and Resurrection.Jesus Christ is at once the message, the messenger, the purpose of the message, and the consummation of the message”(NDC 4).
