linked to what the students discover in their weekly lessons of Seeds, Promise, Good News, Venture, or Visions For example, students may be discussing a story in Venture about a young person who has the opportunity to reveal some damaging but true information about the father of a classmate who always brags about the financial success of his family The Teaching Guide for this story would signal the teacher to refer students to the description inthe Venture handbook of the Eighth Commandment and its prohibitionof the sin of detraction The teacher could conclude the day’s lesson by exploring what the handbook says about the Commandments: how they originated, when they originated, and why God chose Moses to deliver them to the Hebrew people Additional connections to the catechism handbooks occur withinthe student lessons for Good News, Venture, and Visions in a special call- out box The goal of the editors of the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies is to make this faith formation program both timely and timeless It is timely in that stories refer to moral issues that will be important to today’s young people; timeless because these issues have always been at the core of the human condition The content of the Weeklies changes according to the season of the Church year, the Gospel of the Sunday, and events of the times we live in; but the content of the Catechism- based handbook remains the same, a reminder of the eternal principles that guide our faith life Teaching GuidesEach level has a free Teaching Guide— four pages per lesson for all levels These guides explain how to use the resources in each lesson in a three-step teaching process:1 Share Experiences invites the children to bring their own experiences to each lesson, then draws on those experiencesto ready the children to delve into the Gospel and discover its meaning for them 2 Discover Gospel and Doctrineallows the children to connect their experiences—their life stories—with the Story, as they proclaim, dramatize, and celebrate the Gospel connections between the Sunday Gospel and Church teaching are included here 3 Live the Gospel provides opportunities for the children to put the Gospel into practice in ways appropriate to their age levels The guides include objectives for each lesson, Scripture background on the Sunday Gospel, and referencesto key doctrinal concepts the young people will explore in the lesson In addition, a colored box appearsin each lesson’s teaching section indicating to the teacher the page in What the Church Believes and Teaches that reflects the Catechism’s teaching on the content of the lesson The guides also include detailed scope and sequence charts, suggestions Activity BooksAvailable for each level of the Weeklies is an Activity Book containing 32 reproducible activities, one for each lesson Activities relate to the Gospel and doctrinal themes Sample topics include the Ten Commandments, the Beatitudes, the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, and Holy Days of Obligation Also included are three Early Start and three Late Close lessons for use with programs that begin or end outside of the 32 Pflaum Gospel Weeklies lessons Music CDsThree music CD sets (Seeds, Promise/ Good News, Venture/Visions) feature songs by well-known Catholic composer John Burland Each set contains 2 CDs correlated to the seasons of the Liturgical Year Each CD set includes acclamations that can be used for prayer and when transitioning to the Gospel portion of each lesson Online Resource ManualsThe Pflaum Gospel Weeklies provide catechists with Resource Manualsfor each of the five levels These manuals explain the human and faith development of children, classroom management and organization, and group dynamic techniques for each age level Each Resource Manual also discusses in depth the three-step flow of each lesson The Resource Manuals can be found at gospelweeklies com/ catechists-teachers/User GuidePflaum provides a handy User’s Guide for the Weeklies It provides detailed scope and sequence charts for each of the five levels of the Weeklies— including doctrinal content covered in each of the 32 weekly lessons and a guide to using our three-part lesson plan The User’s Guide also provides information about shipping and service, including a schedule of dates when shipments will be sent, and a listing of free online resources to strengthen and enrich your program Three-Year Scope and Sequence ChartPflaum also provides a Three-Year Scope and Sequence Chart in a large, wall poster format The Chart outlineshow the Weeklies’ liturgical approach implements the doctrinal norms for comprehensive catechesis as described in the National Directory for Catechesis by attending to guidelines established by the Catechism of the Catholic Church and its organization of doctrinal content around four categories or pillars:l Creedl Sacraments l Moralityl PrayerSince the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies orient catechesis toward sharingin Sunday worship, the Chart lists statements and/or elements of believing, celebrating, living, and praying that flow from the Gospels of the 32 Sundays for which the Weeklies are published 10
