SOWING THE GOSPELIn the parable of the sower, Jesus tells us some seed never sprouts, some withers, some gets choked out by weeds. But he promises, too, that some seed falls on good ground and yields thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold. The purpose of the liturgical catechesis approach of the Pflaum Gospel Weeklies is to help catechists sow Jesus’ Good News in the good ground of young people’s lives. The Pflaum Gospel Weeklies also share the vision of the National Directory for Catechesis (NDC) that “Jesus Christ is the energizing center of evangelization and the heart of catechesis. Christ, the first evangelizer, is himself the Good News who proclaims the Kingdom of God and accomplishes the salvation of all by his redemptive suffering, death, and Resurrection. Jesus Christ is at once the message, the messenger, the purpose of the message, and the consummation of the message” (NDC 4).The Pflaum Gospel This catechesis encourages—Weeklies share the visionof the revised General Directory for Catechesis(GDC) that Jesus’ parableof the sower (Mark 4.1-8) inspires the Church’s mission of evangelization and catechesis. The sower in the parable is Jesus Christ. The seed is the Wordof God. The field is the world (GDC #15).Jesus proclaimed his Gospel in Palestine 2,000 years ago and sent disciples to sow the Good News of God’s forgiving, healing, life-giving love inthe world. Today, the Holy Spirit animates ministers ofthe Word—preachers, parents, teachers, and catechists—to continue this sowing in the good ground of Christians’ lives and through them in the field of the world.● a living experience of our creative, compassionate God who loves us into being like a parent;● a rediscovery of Jesus as both God’s beloved Son and our wholeheartedly self- giving brother;● a responsiveness to the Spirit, who animates our lives and urges us to co-responsibility for the Church’s mission in the world;● a raised consciousness that recognizes the duties of social justice that accompany faith (GDC #24).
