Assessment of student comprehension is important for all disciplines. In addition to measuring student progress, assessment gives the teacher an opportunity to gauge the e ectiveness of his or her teaching methods. Testing in a faith formation program, however, comes with a special warning. Religion tests are not faith tests.
e assessment instruments used in a catechetical program demonstrate a student’s literacy in the language and the content of the faith. Teachers and administrators need to be careful not to interpret success on a religion test as a sign of a child’s faith. Equating the two is directly contrary to the purpose of catechesis as an element in the initiation process.
e P aum Gospel Weeklies Faith Formation Program provides an assessment program for its top three levels—Good News, Venture, and Visions. For children in pre-kindergarten through the rst grade, participation in activities and the class process will provide the teacher with all the needed assessment
of progress. However, Weekly Review templates are available for all ve levels of the program.
For children in grades two through eight, the P aum assessment program o ers six simple tools:
• A pretest to be administered at the beginning of the year. is test will give the teacher a snapshot of how much each student already knows about the content of the faith for the upcoming level.
• Four unit tests. ese tests are to be administered a er each eight-week unit of the program.
• A final test. is test is administered a er all thirty-two sessions of the P aum Gospel Weeklies have been completed
• A Weekly Lesson Assessment is available separately on gospelweeklies.com
ere is also an answer key for each test. In addition to the answers, the key correlates each question and its answer with the weekly sessions, with What the Church Believes and Teaches. Because the tests are designed and intended to help the instruction process not to assign rank or value to the students, they do not include grading criteria.
e tests are provided in two formats – PDF’s for
easy duplication and formatted Word documents that give the teacher, should he or she wish, the ability to customize the tests by changing, adding, or removing questions. e PDF’s are interactive and can be completed using Adobe Acrobat Reader https://get. adobe.com/reader/. Post the le on your student’s Google doc page (or similar), or send to them via email and have them return the completed assessment to you. Permission is granted to duplicate and use these tests only as a supplement to the P aum Gospel Weeklies.
