Scripture Background
Palm/Passion Sunday begins Holy Week, in which Catholics celebrate Jesus’ Last Supper, his Death, and his Resurrection—the events that founded Christianity. Through Jesus’ Death and Resurrection, we share God’s life. This is the central Christian mystery of redemption.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
In this lesson, the young people will read and perform a Passion play, The Road to the Cross and Beyond. It continues the Advent-Christmas play, The Road from Beginning to End. These two plays are Visions’ effort to tell the Christian story as a continuous whole and to help young people recognize that the Christian story continues the story of God’s love for the People of Israel. Encourage the young people to prepare this play for other classes or for their parents. By dramatizing this story, young people will remember more of the story and will make it their own.
Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem manifests the coming of the kingdom that the King- Messiah, welcomed into his city by children and the humble of heart, is going to accomplish by the Passover of his Death and Resurrection (CCC, 570). Christ’s whole life is a mystery of redemption. Redemption comes to us above all through the blood of the cross, but this mystery is at work through Christ’s entire life (CCC, 517).
