Sunday Readings: Jeremiah 31:31–34; Hebrews 5:7–9; John 12:20–33
                 For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus faces hostile religious leaders who are plotting against him. Many Jews and Greeks who are in Jerusalem for Passover seek him out. His popularity fuels his opponents’ hostility. Jesus’ friends worry about him. Jesus uses the life cycle of wheat to
teach them about what will happen to him. He explains, “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit” (John 12:24). Jesus challenges his friends to follow him—to serve others and give their lives as he does. Venture explores the grain of wheat metaphor by introducing the children to Archbishop Romero and the seventh, ninth, and tenth commandments.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
The event of the Cross and Resurrection abides and draws everything to itself. “The Eucharist is the memorial of Christ’s Passover, that is, of the work of salvation accomplished by the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, a work made present by the liturgical action” (CCC, 1409). “When we say ‘Our’ Father, we are invoking the new covenant in Jesus Christ, communion with the Holy Trinity, and the divine love which spreads through the Church to encompass the world” (CCC, 2801).

Seeds need dirt, water, and sun so they can sprout and grow. In Sunday’s Gospel reading, Jesus tells followers that our lives are like seeds—to sprout, they must rst crack and die. All living beings need certain things to grow and thrive. For each photo write what is needed for growth and change.
