Scripture Background
This is the last Venture lesson for the year. The children know by now that the Scripture readings, especially the Gospel, are relevant to them and their lives. Commend them on their ability and willingness to reflect on Scripture and to let it guide their daily decisions and actions.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Christ’s Ascension marks the definitive entrance of Jesus’ humanity into God’s heavenly domain, whence he will come again. Jesus, the head of the Church, precedes us into the Father’s glorious kingdom so that we, the members of his Body, may live in the hope of one day being with him forever (CCC, 665-66). “The Church was made manifest to the world on the day of Pentecost by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit” (CCC, 1076).
Editor’s Note: The Ascension of the Lord is now celebrated in the United States on a Sunday (May 13 in 2018) except in the archdioceses of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, Philadelphia. In these archdioceses, Ascension is celebrated on the preceding Thursday (May 10), and they will observe the 7th Sunday of Easter on May 13.
