Sunday Readings: Acts 3:13–15, 17–19; 1 John 2:1–5a; Luke 24:35–48
             For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In this Sunday’s Gospel, the Risen Jesus appears to his friends and designates them as his witnesses. They have Good News to tell—love is stronger than death; joy and triumph can come out of suffering; life can come from death; and we can live forever with Jesus.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Venture looks at how the risen Jesus is present to us today. The children explore the Church’s great prayer of remembrance and thanks, the Eucharistic Prayer. They discover that they are part of a thankful people who remember, witness, and celebrate the Good News of Jesus—risen and present with us.
“In particular, Jesus’ redemptive death ful lls Isaiah’s prophecy of the su ering Servant. Indeed Jesus himself explained the meaning of his life and death in the light of God’s su ering Servant. After his Resurrection he gave this interpretation of the Scriptures to the disciples at Emmaus” (CCC, 601). “Jesus freely o ered himself for our salvation. Beforehand, during the Last Supper, he both symbolized this o ering and made it really present: ‘This is my body which is given for you’” (Luke 22:19; CCC, 621).

Peter and the other Apostles (Andrew, Matthew, and Philip) and the disciples who also accompanied Jesus (Joanna, Susanna, and Mary Magdalene) are nervously pacing about the room. They seem anxious and afraid. Cleopas and Companion enter from off-stage right and knock on door. This startles the disciples and they huddle together. Cleopas: (pounding on door) Open up!
Peter: You can’t be Cleopas. He left Jerusalem this morning.
Cleopas: Yes, Peter, I did go, but I’m back. Unbar the door! Peter opens the door. The two enter.
