Seeds to you—Jesus is walking through a field of wheat with friends. Give them time to notice and comment on all the detail and on the happy faces of the people. Ask: What do you suppose the people are talking about? Accept all answers, then read the cover sentence. Ask: What food do you see? They may say none. Tell them about how the wheat grows from seeds and makes new seeds. Have a wheat stalk (often available from florists) or grains of wheat to show. These wheat seeds are ground up to make flour. Ask: What happens to the flour?
Tell the children that in the picture, Jesus is telling his friends something important. Jesus is saying, “A grain of wheat that falls on the ground will never be more than one grain unless it dies. But if it dies, it will produce lots of wheat. If you love your life, you will lose it. If you give it up in this world, you will be given eternal life. If you serve me, you must go with me. My servants will be with me wherever I am. If you serve me, my Father will honor you.”
Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
Live the Gospel
Objective The children will recognize loving and unloving actions.
Activity l Loving and Unloving Actions (page 4) Have the children go to the work area and fold Seeds so that only page 4 is showing. Have them count the number of pictures. Read the title. Ask: What is a loving action? Being kind, sharing, not fighting. Direct them to take a crayon and put a big X by the pictures that are loving actions. Ask: Are there any unloving actions happening? Tell them we can cancel those unloving actions by gluing a strip of red paper across the actions as in Do Not Enter or No Smoking signs. Distribute the red paper strips and glue and help the children place the strips diagonally across the unloving pictures.
Activity l Feed the Hungry Ask: How do you share food with people who are hungry? Your parish may have a food bank or food collection bin. Some children may help prepare sandwiches or serve meals at shelters with their parents. These are ways children learn to practice the social teaching of the Church.
Closing Prayer Gather in a prayer circle. Have the children pray thank-you prayers for food they like, for the people who give them food, and for God who made all the plants and animals. Conclude with the Blessing Before Meals.
Lead the children in singing “CHOICES” (CD-2, #9) to bring your session to a close.
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
session. This will provide the children with practice saying this prayer.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Seeds, page 4.
What the Church Believes and Teaches
Prayers to Know: Blessing Before Meals (page 33)
The children will become familiar and comfortable with “Prayers to Know” through repetition throughout the year. The goal is for the children to eventually learn these important Catholic prayers by heart so they can feel part of the community that is praying the Lord’s Prayer at Mass and the family that is praying before meals.
Ask: Whose family says a prayer before or after eating? Invite the children to share how this is done and what prayer is said in their home.
Help the children to learn the Blessing Before Meals by saying a line and asking them to repeat that line after you. You may also wish to share this hint with parents. Preschool children will probably need help to remember some of this prayer, but most children should be able to memorize it after some practice.
Lead the children in praying the Blessing Before Meals before snack time if you share a snack during your class
