Objective The children will learn about celebrations. Gather in a prayer circle. Play and sing “Easter People”
(CD-1, #14).
Gathering Prayer “Jesus, we thank you for our year together. We thank you for our friendship with each other and the joy of your teachings.” The children respond, “Amen.”
Story l The Animals’ Celebration Sit in a story circle. Ask: What special days do you celebrate? How do you celebrate? Tell this story about the animals’celebration:
Sammy Squirrel wanted to have a party. He had learned how to stay on the side of the street and out of the way of cars. He had learned how to jump from a tree to a roof and back again, and how to run with a nut in his mouth and not drop it. Sammy told his friends about his party.
Ricky Rabbit said, “I can squeeze under a fence into a garden and outrun the big dog and sit so still that no one ever notices me. I want to celebrate too.” Rosemary Robin said, “I’ve grown so much that
I’m almost as big as my parents. I can find worms and build a nest, and my song is beautiful. I want to celebrate too.” Belinda Butterfly fluttered down to sit on Sammy’s head. “When people see me fly around the flowers, it makes them happy. Can I celebrate too?” The animals agreed they all had something to celebrate.
Tell the children that Sunday Mass is a celebration too. Ask: What are we celebrating at Sunday Mass? God loves us; we belong
to Jesus’ family; God forgives us; Jesus teaches us how to get to Heaven. Ask: What foods do you think the animals had at their party? What special food is shared at Mass? Bread and wine that become Jesus for us.
Activity l Creative Movement and Song Move to the open space. Invite the children to pretend to be Sammy Squirrel and do what he can do. Continue with Ricky Rabbit, Rosemary Robin, and Belinda Butterfly. Conclude by playing and singing “Let’s Celebrate Now” (CD-2, #12).

l Reviewwhattheyhavelearned.
Play and sing “Two Little Ears” (CD-1, #4) as preparation for
the proclamation of the Gospel.
Sunday Gospel l Jesus returns to his father. (page 1) After God raised Jesus from the dead, Jesus was with his followers for 40 days. Then he told them he was going back to his Father and they wouldn’t see him anymore. Ask: How do you think Jesus’ friends felt when he told them he would be going away? Invite them to listen carefully to some of Jesus’ last words to his friends:
Jesus told his Apostles, “Go and preach the good news to everyone in the world. Anyone who believes me and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe me will not be saved. Everyone who believes me will be able to do wonderful things. They will heal sick people by placing their hands on them.
After Jesus had said these things to the disciples, he was taken back up to Heaven where he sat down at the right side of God. Then the disciples left and preached everywhere. The Lord was with them, and the miracles they worked proved that their message was true.
We know from the Gospel of John and the Acts of the Apostles that Jesus promised his followers that he would ask the Father to send the Holy Spirit so they would have God’s presence with them always (see John 14:26, 15:26, 16:13 and Acts 1:8). We celebrate the Holy Spirit’s coming on Pentecost (see Acts 2). This is celebrated 50 days after Easter (May 20, 2018) and brings the Easter season to a close.
Move to the worktables. Pass out Seeds. Ask: What do you think is happening in the cover picture? Jesus is returning (ascending) to Heaven. Ask: How do you think his Apostles feel as this is happening?
Distribute crayons and give the children time to draw Jesus in the space provided. They may color in the rest of the picture too.
Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
