What the Church Believes and Teaches
Jesus Makes Promises (page 27)
Help the children locate page 27 in their Catechism handbooks. Tell them that Jesus made promises about praying.
Read the first promise then ask: Who do you pray with? When do you pray with others? Write responses on the board. Read the text that follows the promise.
Read the second promise and tell the children that Jesus always keeps his promises. He always hears our prayers. Sometimes we don’t get an answer right away or we don’t get the answer we want, but Jesus will always hear our prayers and respond with love.
Explain that our prayers to Jesus can be about the same things we say to our family and friends. Ask: When do
you thank someone? What words do you use? When do you tell them you love them? What words do you use? When do you ask for help? What words do you use? When do you tell someone you’re sorry? What words do you use?
Tell the children that when they pray, they can thank Jesus, tell Jesus they love him, ask Jesus to help them and others, and tell Jesus they are sorry for their sins. Give the children time to complete the prayer starters.
Read the third promise and the words about the Holy Spirit that follow. Then read aloud the prayer to the Holy Spirit. Give the children time to decorate the prayer.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, page 2.
     Live the Gospel
Objectives l The children will:
l LearnhowtheHolySpiritunitesJesus’followers.
l ConsiderhowtheycansharetheGoodNews.
Activity l The Holy Spirit unites Jesus’ followers. (page 2). Call the children back to the Gospel storytelling circle. Direct their attention to the picture of Jesus’
friends after he had returned to his Father. Ten days after Jesus ascended to Heaven, the Holy Spirit came to Jesus’ followers
just as he’d promised. We celebrate the Holy Spirit’s coming on Pentecost (see Acts 2). This is celebrated 50 days after Easter (May 20, 2018) and brings the Easter season to a close.
Invite the children to talk about what the people pictured might be doing. Point out that the whole room is under the wings of a bird. The Holy Spirit is often pictured as a dove in the Bible.
Read aloud the title of page 2. Tell the children that an important job of the Holy Spirit is to help us stay connected to each other and to God. Point out that the people are doing di erent things but all of them are connected to each other and to God because of their friendship with Jesus and the help of the Holy Spirit.
Activity l I can share the Good News. (page 3) Direct the children to turn to Promise page 3. Invite a volunteer to read the title. Tell the children that we are followers of Jesus, and Jesus needs us to share his Good News. Invite them to draw or write about how they can share the Good News of Jesus with their families, friends, and other people. Help them understand that we can share the Good News through our actions as well as through words.
Activity l Promise Certificate (page 4) Fill out the certificates before class, leaving only the children’s name spaces blank. Direct the children to print their names neatly on the first line. Read the certificate together.
Closing Prayer Gather in the prayer circle. Invite the children to repeat each line of the prayer after you. Pray: Every day when I play, the Spirit is with me. / Every day when I pray, the Spirit is with me. / When I’m tired, when I’m sad, / when friends and family make me glad, / the Spirit is with me. / Holy Spirit, help me to share the Good News. / Amen.
Close your prayer and gathering by singing “The Holy Spirit” (CD-2, #8).
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
