SUNDAY GOSPEL Jesus Comes to Jerusalem
Narrator 1: Jesus decided to go to Jerusalem. He said to two of his followers:
Jesus: Go ahead and bring me the colt that is tied up near the road. Narrator 1: So they did.
Narrator 1: Jesus rode the colt down the hillside toward Jerusalem. People came out to welcome Jesus like a king. They cut down leafy branches from the fields and scattered them on the road.
First Follower: Here is the colt. I’ll put my cloak on it.
Second Follower: Good idea. I will too. Jesus can sit on them.

Scripture Background
The first Gospel and procession of Palm Sunday recalls how the people of Jerusalem Materials
Palm/Passion Sunday Mark 11:1–10
welcomed Jesus. The Mass that follows includes the Gospel of the Passion.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Good News eexplores moments in Jesus’story—Palm Sunday (Jesus’triumphal entry into Jerusalem), Holy Thursday (Jesus’ Last Supper with his Apostles) and Good Friday (Jesus’ Passion and Death).
Holy Week begins in joyful recognition that Jesus is Messiah and Lord. This is closely followed, however, by the tragic darkness of Jesus’ Passion and Death. One friend betrays Jesus, another denies him, and many others flee for fear of their lives. Good News brings these events of Jesus’ life into the classroom for the children to experience as an extended prayer drama.
“Jesus’entry into Jerusalem manifests the coming of the kingdom that the Messiah-King, welcomed into his city by children and the humble of heart, is going to accomplish by the Passover of his Death and Resurrection” (CCC, 570). “It is with the celebration of that entry on Palm Sunday that the Church’s liturgy solemnly opens Holy Week” (CCC, 560).
Christ’s whole life is a mystery of redemption. Redemption comes to us above all through the blood of his cross, but this mystery is at work throughout Christ’s entire life”(CCC, 517). See also CCC, 557–60, 591, 621, 629, 1112, 1189–91, 1346.
