Scripture Background
“As the Father loves me, so I also love you,” Jesus tells his followers as he bids them farewell in Sunday’s Gospel. This Gospel is taken from Jesus’ long talk with his Apostles at the Last Supper. He is preparing them for their lives without him. He calls them to live on in his love. He gives them one rule: “Love one another as I love you.”
Jesus anticipates his death. “No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends,” he says. Jesus calls his followers “friends.”
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
God has sent Jesus and, in Jesus, has chosen us as friends. Our friendship with Jesus has a purpose— that we go forth and bear fruit. God sent Jesus to show the unlimited love God has for us. We respond by imitating that love for those around us.
Catholics honor Mary in May. This Good News lesson features Mary and her role as loving mother in Jesus’ life and in our own.
“Jesus makes charity the new commandment. By loving his own ‘to the end’ (John 13:10), he makes manifest the Father’s love which he receives. By loving one another, the disciples imitate the love of Jesus which they themselves receive. Jesus says, ‘As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.’ And again: ‘This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you’ (John 15:9, 12)” (CCC, 1823, 1972).

Jesus Says to Love One Another
Narrator: Jesus had supper with his friends the night before he died. He told them everything he wanted them to remember.
their master is doing. I call you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father.
Jesus 1: As the Father loves me, I also love you. Remain in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love.
Jesus 2: I have told you this so that my joy may be in you, and your
joy may be complete. This is my commandment: love one another as I love you.
Jesus 3: No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you.
Jesus 1: I no longer call you slaves, because slaves do not know what
Jesus 2: It was not you who chose me. I chose you. I send you out to bear fruit that will remain.
Jesus 3: Whatever you ask the Father in my name, God will give you. This I command you: love one another.
