Scripture Background
In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus refers to himself as the vine. He says that his followers are the branches. Jesus shares God’s life with us. We belong to his family. As long as we stay connected to Jesus like branches connected to the trunk of a vine, we will share God’s life, grow in faith and love, and produce good fruit.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Jesus teaches that just as a vine and its branches share life, so his followers share life with him. The Church is the vine of God and the family of God. The power and life that flow from Jesus’ Death and Resurrection gather and unite us.
“By the power of the Spirit, God’s children can bear much fruit. He who has grafted us onto the true vine will make us bear ‘the fruit of the Spirit:...love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control’ (Galatians 5:22–23)” (CCC, 736). “The Holy Spirit is like the sap of the Father’s vine which bears fruit on its branches” (CCC, 1108). “The mission of Christ and the Holy Spirit is brought to completion in the Church, which is the Body of Christ and the Temple of the Holy Spirit” (CCC, 737). See also CCC, 729, 820, 822.
