Sunday Readings: Acts 4:8–12; 1 John 3:1–2; John 10:11–18
    For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus calls himself the Good Shepherd. He tells his friends he knows and cares for them just as a shepherd cares for his sheep. Jesus says he will even lay down his life for his sheep, whom he knows by name.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Even though few people care for sheep in our society, this image still has power. Jesus calls us to be good shepherds, too, showing care for those with whom we share our lives. Since this Sunday is also Earth Day, Good News connects a shepherd’s care for his sheep to our responsibility to care for God’s Creation.
“By embracing in his human heart the Father’s love for men, Jesus ‘loved them to the end,’ for ‘greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends’” (John 13:1; 15:13) (CCC, 609). “The Church is...a sheepfold, the sole and necessary gateway to which is Christ. It is also the ock of which God himself foretold that he would be the shepherd, and whose sheep, even though governed by human shepherds, are unfailingly nourished and led by Christ himself ” (CCC, 754). See also CCC, 606–607, 623, 2686.
“Man’s dominion over inanimate and other living beings...is limited by concern for the quality of life of his neighbor, including generations to come; it requires a religious respect for the integrity of creation” (CCC, 2415).
