Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, the Risen Jesus appears to his friends on Easter night with a message of peace and forgiveness. It’s a sign of Jesus’ great tenderness for his friends that he wishes them peace.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Jesus spent his ministry gathering people together, calling them to serve and forgive one another. On the Cross, he gave his life that others might live and come together in his name. In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus’ disciples become witnesses of his Resurrection. They become the bearers of the Good News of Jesus’ risen presence to the people of the world. They have this news to tell—love is stronger than death; joy and triumph can come out of su ering; life can come from death; we will live forever with Jesus.
“Jesus’ redemptive death ful lls Isaiah’s prophecy of the su ering Servant. Indeed
Jesus himself explained the meaning of his life and death in the light of God’s su ering Servant. After his Resurrection he gave this interpretation of the Scriptures to the disciples at Emmaus, and then to the apostles” (CCC, 601). “Jesus freely o ered himself for our salvation. Beforehand, during the Last Supper, he both symbolized this o ering and made it really present: ‘This is my body which is given for you’” (Luke 22:19) (CCC, 621). See also CCC, 1409.
