Scripture Background
Easter Sunday and the whole Easter season that follows celebrate the core of Christian faith: that God raised Jesus, who was crucified, from the dead.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
The promise of Jesus is that all who believe in him will be raised up to new life too. The act of raising Jesus reveals most ultimately who God is—the one who gives life. Easter is the season for celebrating how Jesus still lives in the Church and gives us the capacity to love as he did.
“The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith in Christ” (CCC, 638). “Mary Magdalene and the holy women who came to finish anointing the body of Jesus...were the first to encounter the Risen One. Thus the women were the first messengers of Christ’s Resurrection for the apostles themselves” (CCC, 641). See also CCC, 639–642, 658, 1193, 994–1001.
