Scripture Background
Jesus begins his ministry in Sunday’s Gospel. He preaches, heals, prays, travels, calls disciples, and teaches throughout Galilee. When he calls four fishermen to follow him, they respond with speed and enthusiasm, but we learn throughout the Gospels that there are many times when these same disciples don’t fully understand the work of Jesus. They question, doubt, and even deny him at times. It takes time and experience before these disciples truly become fishers of people, for the sake of Christ.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
“By his word, through signs that manifest the reign of God, and by sending out disciples, Jesus calls all people to come together around him” (CCC, 542). “From the beginning of his public life Jesus chose certain men, twelve in number, to be with him and to participate in his mission” (CCC, 551). “In all his life Jesus presents himself as our model. He is ‘the perfect man,’ who invites us to become his disciples and follow him” (CCC, 520).
