Sunday Readings: 2 Chronicles 36:14–16,19–23; Ephesians 2:4–10; John 3:14–21
For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
Sunday’s Gospel opens in the middle of a conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee who ventures under cover of night to meet Jesus (John 3). In verse 16, Jesus makes a famous summary of his message: God so loved the world that God sent the Son to be our light. Jesus has come not to condemn us but to show us God’s love in his healing, forgiving, freeing actions. This is his light and our path to goodness.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
The title Son of God signifies the unique and eternal relationship of Jesus Christ to God his Father: he is the only Son of the Father. To be a Christian, one must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (CCC, 454). “The Word of God is a light for our path. We must assimilate it in faith and prayer and put it into practice. This is how moral conscience is formed” (CCC, 1802).

Editor’s Note: Just as we have the option to use the color rose on the 3rd Sunday of Advent as a sign of our joy, we may also use rose on the 4th Sunday of Lent. This Sunday is known as Laetare Sunday. Laetare (like Advent’s Gaudete) refers to rejoicing. Christians rejoice in the salvation gained for us by Christ’s suffering, Death, and Resurrection.
