Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus cleanses the Temple building and calls us to see both him and
us, his followers, as dwelling places for God. In Sunday’s First Reading, God gives us the Commandments. Both readings open up new possibilities for human beings. As temples of God and as followers of the Commandments, we are called to help create God’s kingdom by living as Jesus lived and by keeping the Commandments.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Visions explores what young people can do when they see a wrong, decide on how best to fix it, and create a new community in the process. Jesus went up to the Temple as the privileged place of encounter with God. For him, the Temple was the dwelling place of his Father, a
house of prayer, and he was angered that its outer courts had become a place of commerce (CCC, 584). “By his life and by his preaching Jesus attested to the permanent validity of the Decalogue” (CCC, 2076). “The Ten Commandments state what is required in the love of God and love of neighbor” (CCC, 2067).
