February 18, 2018 • 1st Sunday of Lent
Sunday Readings: Genesis 9:8–15; 1 Peter 3:18–22; Mark 1:12–15
For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
The Scripture readings for Sunday call us to new beginnings this Lent. The rst readings throughout Lent tell great moments in Israel’s history. On this rst Sunday, Noah and his family begin life after the world-destroying ood; the bow in the clouds signi es God’s promise never again to destroy the earth. Mark’s telling of Jesus’ 40 days in the desert is short and simple. The Spirit drives Jesus there; Satan tests him. The 40 days recall Israel’s 40-year desert sojourn.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
“Jesus’ victory over the tempter in the desert anticipates victory at the Passion, the supreme act of obedience of his lial love for the Father” (CCC, 539). “By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert” (CCC, 540). “God made an everlasting covenant with Noah and with all living beings. It will remain in force as long as the world lasts” (CCC, 71).
