Sunday Readings: Exodus 20:1–17; 1 Corinthians 1:22–25; John 2:13–25
For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus makes clear that the real temple of God lies within us. His cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem calls us to cleanse our own temples—ourselves. We have the 40 days of Lent to make a special effort to grow less selfish and more loving, to let the Spirit shine in us more clearly, to renew and deepen our covenant with God.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Venture gives the children a dramatization of God’s giving the Commandments to the Hebrews. This play will help the children appreciate the history of the Commandments that they are applying to their daily lives through the Lenten Gospel activities.
Jesus went up to the Temple as the privileged place of encounter with God. For him, the Temple was the dwelling place of his Father, a house of prayer, and he was angered that its outer courts had become a place of commerce (CCC, 584). “The Ten Commandments state what is required in the love of God and love of neighbor. The first three concern love of God, and the other seven love of neighbor” (CCC, 2067).
