Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, the Spirit that Jesus receives at his Baptism impels him into the wilderness for 40 days. The desert is a place of testing, but also of closeness to God. Jesus’ action calls us to make the 40 days of Lent a season of growth, a season for developing a habit that will make us more loving toward God and one another.
This week’s Venture introduces the Biblical concept of covenant. The Old Testament readings for the Sundays of Lent tell stories of God’s covenants with Noah, Abraham, and the Israelites. Beginning next week, the Gospel activities in Venture will explore the Ten Commandments (the Sinai Covenant) during the weeks of Lent.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Jesus’victory over the tempter in the desert anticipates victory at the Passion, the supreme act of obedience of his lial love for the Father (CCC, 538). “By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert” (CCC, 540). “God made an everlasting covenant with Noah and with all living beings. It will remain in force as long as the world lasts” (CCC, 71). “Beginning with the Easter Triduum as its source of light, the new age of the Resurrection lls the whole liturgical year with its brilliance. Gradually on either side of this source, the year is trans gured by the liturgy” (CCC, 1168).
