Our Catholic Faith l People From Africa in the Bible (page 5) Read aloud the introductory paragraph. Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a Bible. Assign each small group one of the questions on the page. Give the groups time to do their reading, to check their Bible references, and to record their findings. Then have each group share what
it discovered with the class. Give the children time to draw one of the five people in the examples, or assign it as a take-home project. Answers: Zipporah, the Queen of Sheba, the queen of the south, Simon of Cyrene, the Ethiopian eunuch.
Live the Gospel
Objectives l The children will:
l Practice applying Gospel teaching to real-life situations.
l Learn about the bravery of Saints Felicity and Perpetua.
Activity l Do I Live Gospel Values?
(pages 6–7) Read the instructions at the top of page 6 aloud together. Then read the first scenario aloud, also. Ask for responses as to which of Jesus’ teachings on page 6 might help children in this situation.
Direct the children to cut out the five cards on the dotted lines. Hand out similar sized slips of paper. If they remember
other teachings of Jesus that help with the situation, they can write them on the slips. The situations do not have to be solved by an individual; it can be the whole class or group that acts together in a Christ-like fashion. Decide together as a class on the best
way to deal with the kids who are making fun of an immigrant’s speech. Then divide the children into pairs to read and respond
to the three other situations. Be sure there is time to share their responses.
Saints l Saints Perpetua and Felicity (page 8) Give the children time to read this feature. Ask them to consider what they would choose to stand up for. Catholics, for example, stand up for life. Last week, pro-life advocates gathered in Washington, D.C., for the March for Life, and Catholics celebrated the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children on January 22.
Closing Prayer Ask the children if there is anyone among their family or friends for whom they wish to pray. Close by praying the Lord’s Prayer together.
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the With My Family and Friends activities and prayer together.

The Beatitudes
The Beatitudes probably confused Jesus’ rst listeners! They thought it was a bad thing to be poor, meek, hungry, or sad. But Jesus says that in his Kingdom, God will turn all these bad things into good things.
Complete the Beatitudes. Use the code to learn what we find by practicing them.

Unit 3: Jesus Calls Us to Follow Him l
(Matthew 5:3–8)
The Beatitudes
 The Beatitudes bring us ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ ____ when
we put them into practice in our lives.
Ask volunteers to read the first section aloud, with a different child reading each sentence. Then ask the following question:
What is the common good? Everyone thrives; no one is left out. Why should Catholics work for the common good? We are all
created by God with equal dignity.
Pose the following question: Why is it a sin to keep someone from using their talents and forming families and friends? How would you put this paragraph in your own words? If time permits, give the children the opportunity to write a response to this question, or you may wish to assign it as homework.
Read the next section. Ask similar questions. Conclude that as Catholics we must work to help people be all they can be. We praise God when we do this.
Conclude by reviewing the Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching, on page 51. Ask the children which of these themes applies to this Sunday’s Gospel reading.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Venture, page 5.
