Objectives ● The children will: ● Discussforgivenessscenarios.
● PraytheLord’sPrayer.
Activity ● Who needs forgiveness? (pages 3–4) Gather in the work area and direct each child to cut out the forgiveness words and story squares on page 3. Explain that the story squares show situations that require asking for and giving forgiveness. The slips of paper have words the characters in the stories can use.
Direct the children to spread out the story squares in front of them. It doesn’t matter which side is up. Place your own cards in a box or hat. Have the children lay out their forgiveness words in two groups, blue and green.
Invite a volunteer to draw a story square from the box or hat. The child describes what’s happening on one side of the story square. The children find that square in their own set. Then you tell the story of what’s happening. For instance, if the child drew the story square showing a girl falling on a sandcastle, you would tell this story:
Story 1: Jade is building a sandcastle. Jade’s sister Tanya and her friends are playing with a beach ball. Someone kicks the ball hard. Tanya runs to catch it. She falls on Jade’s sandcastle and smashes it. Ask: How might Jade feel when her castle is knocked over? How might Tanya feel? What can Tanya say? What can Jade say?
Invite the children to find words the two children can say to each other and place them near the girls in the picture. They may choose any words they wish. Invite the children to take turns telling what words they chose and why they chose them.
Continue with the other story squares:
Story 2: Jade asks if Tanya’s doll, Samantha, can come to a party on the porch. “Samantha can come if you take good care of her,” After the tea party, Jade goes inside to watch TV. She doesn’t hear it start to rain. When Tanya comes home, she finds a wet Samantha on the porch. Ask: How might Jade feel? What can Jade say? What can Tanya say?
Story 3: Erin gets out her Mickey Mouse pencil. She opens her tablet with the Disney World stickers on it. She pushes up the sleeves of
her Cinderella shirt. Then Erin hears a whisper behind her. “Erin is a show-off.” Erin turns around. The whisperer is Jennifer. “You’re always showing off about Disney World,” Jennifer says. Ask: How might Erin feel? How might Jennifer feel? What can Jennifer say? What can Erin say?
Story 4: Erin is one of the captains for Red Rover. When it’s her turn to pick, Jennifer says, “Choose me!” Erin says, “You can’t run fast enough.” The other children laugh. Ask: How might Jennifer feel? How might Erin feel? What can Erin say? What can Jennifer say?
Story 5: Brett is drawing a dinosaur to give to his grandpa. “What are you drawing?” his brother Mikey asks. “Nothing,” Brett says. “Can I see it?” asks Mikey. “Not until I am finished,” Brett says. “I just want to look,” Mikey says. Mikey grabs the paper. There’s a ripping sound. Ask: How might Brett feel? How might Mikey feel? What can Mikey say? What can Brett say?
Story 6: Brett’s family is having a picnic. Mikey wants to swing. “Come and push me,” Mikey asks Brett. “I don’t want to,” says Brett, Mikey asks again, “Push me!” Brett gives Mikey such a hard push that he falls out of the swing and starts to cry. Ask: How might Mikey feel? How might Brett feel? What can Brett say? What can Mikey say?
Closing Prayer “Loving God, we thank you for the gifts of light and darkness. Help us to live in the light of your love, truth, and forgiveness.” Pray the Lord’s Prayer together.
Play and sing “God’s Love Is...” (CD-2, #6) to bring your session and prayer to a close.
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.
Conclude by reading the final paragraph on page 6.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Promise, page 3.
