Sunday Readings: Exodus 20:1–17; 1 Corinthians 1:22–25; John 2:13–25
For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus drives merchants and moneychangers from the Temple courtyard, angry that they are making a marketplace out of that sacred space. In response to their indignation, Jesus tells the sellers and moneychangers a riddle that even his friends understand only after his Resurrection.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Jesus makes it clear that the real temple of God lies within us. His cleansing of the Temple in Jerusalem calls us to cleanse our own temples—ourselves. We have the 40 days of Lent to make a special effort to grow less selfish and more loving, to let the Holy Spirit shine in us more clearly, to renew and deepen our covenant with God.
Good News helps the children connect their experiences and feelings of home and family with Jesus’ emphasis that he and we are temples of God. We are the Church.
“Jesus went up to the Temple as the privileged place of encounter with God. For him, the Temple was the dwelling of his Father, a house of prayer, and he was angered that its outer courts had become a place of commerce” (CCC, 584). See also CCC, 72, 583, 586, 593, 755, 1969, 1980, 2056–2063, and 2076–2080.
