Scripture Background
Sunday’s Gospel is the story of the Transfiguration, a story that three of the four Gospel writers have saved for us. Peter, James, and John witness Jesus with Moses and Elijah, the greatest teacher and the greatest prophet of the Israelites. Jesus’ clothes dazzle the disciples. A voice from Heaven tells them Jesus is the Son of God. They don’t know what to think, but they look, listen, and remember.
The Transfiguration gives us a vision of Jesus’ risen life to come following his suffering and Death. This vision both heartens and confuses Peter, James, and John, who cannot imagine a path to glory through suffering.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
The Trans guration also gives us a vision of Christian living. It gives us a vision of ourselves transformed by the power of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection. This transformation is a lifelong process for each Christian. Each season of Lent is another springtime in our lifelong growing into people who are like Jesus.
“Christ’s Trans guration aims at strengthening the apostles’ faith in anticipation of his Passion: the ascent onto the ‘high mountain’ prepares for the ascent to Calvary. Christ, Head of the Church, manifests what his Body contains and radiates in the sacraments: ‘the hope of glory’” (CCC, 568). See also CCC, 2810.
