Discuss the Know questions related to the Gospel. 1. Prays, remembers God’s love, enjoys the beauty of Creation, sacri ces by fasting from sunrise to sundown. 2.
Accept all answers—church, home, school, friends, and relatives. 3. Open-ended. Ask the children how they show they believe what Jesus says about God.
Connecting Gospel and Doctrine (page 3)

Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.
together. You may wish to say a thank-you prayer together so the children can cut out the P and glue it under the letter L to begin their calendar.
Plan to bring your copy of the Lenten calendar to class each week to use as a reminder.
Closing Prayer Gather seated in a prayer circle. Ask: For whom or what do you wish to pray? Add petitions to include
the larger world if the children do not mention any. Gather the intentions and pray: “Jesus, we are blessed to be part of your community of friends. Thank you for calling us to follow you. Bless our e orts during Lent to love and care for others as you did in your life. Bless our families and friends too.”The children respond, “Amen.”
Close your prayer and gathering by singing “These Ashes” (CD-1, #15).
Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the Family Corner activities and prayer together.

What the Church Believes and Teaches
Praying the Stations of the Cross (pages 41–42)
Invite the children to turn to page 41. Direct them to take turns reading the description of each station. Take the children to church so they can walk along with you as you explain the stations. Let them take their handbooks to church and follow along. Some churches have a 15th station that depicts the empty tomb or the resurrected Jesus.
Allow time for the children to reflect on each station and write short prayers of their own for each station.
Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Good News, page 4.
Live the Gospel
Objective The children will begin a Lenten calendar.
Activity l I Respond to God’s Love Lenten Calendar (pages 1 and 4) The children will keep this Lenten calendar for the first five weeks of Lent. If you meet only once a week, they will need to complete the calendar each week at home. Suggest that they hang it on the refrigerator or family bulletin board so the entire family may be reminded of Lenten actions.
Read the title and introductory copy aloud. Show the children where the Lenten practices for this week are (page 1). Ask what word they think the four letters spell—PRAY. Each of the four practices suggested this week is about prayer. Read them aloud

We Live in Community
A society is a community of people with a shared purpose or common good. What is truly good for one person is good for everyone in a society. And if something is bad for one person, it probably hurts everyone. As Catholics, we understand that all people have rights.
