Sunday Readings: Genesis 9:8–15; 1 Peter 3:18–22; Mark 1:12–15
     For Catechists and Teachers
Scripture Background
In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus spends time alone praying to his Father and then begins his ministry of spreading the Good News of God’s love.
The First Readings for the Sundays of Lent feature stories from the Old Testament that are especially signi cant in Israel’s history. This Sunday’s First Reading brie y tells the story of Noah. The children will recognize the message of the First Reading and the Gospel is the same: God loves us.
Connecting Scripture and Doctrine
Lent is a time to remember God’s love for us and explore ways we can spread this Good News to others. Children should be encouraged to appreciate the love of God all around them in the beauty of Creation, the gathering of the Christian community, and the love and care of parents, family, teachers, and friends.
“Jesus’ victory over the tempter in the desert anticipates victory at the Passion, the supreme act of obedience of his lial love for the Father” (CCC, 539). “By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert” (CCC, 540). See also CCC, 1438, 333, 1080.

A rainbow appeared. “This bow in the clouds is a sign of covenant between me and all living things,” God said. “I will never again flood the earth.”
