November 19, 2017 • 33rd Sunday in Ordinary TimeSunday Readings: Proverbs 31:10–13, 19–20, 30–31; 1 Thessalonians 5:1–6; Matthew 25:14–30For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundIn Sunday’s Gospel parable, Jesus challenges his listeners—including us—to place ourselves among the three servants in the story. Are we like the two who doubled the money entrusted to them or like the servant who buried the money out of fear of losing it?In Jesus’ time, a laborer made one denarius a day. A talent equaled 6,000 denarii. Working six days a week, a laborer earned 340 denarii per year. One talent equaled more than 17 years worth of labor. To earn five talents would take 85 years.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineJesus calls us to care for the world and for each other until he comes again. He calls us to use our God-given talents, not bury or hide them. This week’s Visions lesson also uses the biblical example of the ideal wife in this Sunday’s First Reading to encourage young people to explore what it means to live an “ideal” life.“The whole of Christ’s life was a continual teaching: his silences, his miracles, his gestures, his prayer, his love for people, his special affection for the little and the poor, his acceptance of the total sacrifice on the Cross for the redemption of the world, and his Resurrection are the actualization of his word and the fulfillment of revelation” (CCC, 561, citing On Catechesis in Our Time, 9).“Human work proceeds directly from persons created in the image of God and called to prolong the work of creation.... [W]ork is a duty.... Work honors the Creator’s gifts and the talents received from him” (CCC, 2427).Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
