December 25, 2017 and January 7, 2018 Christmas and EpiphanyChristmas Readings: Isaiah 9:1–6, Titus 2:11–14; Luke 2:1–14 Epiphany Readings: Isaiah 60:1–6; Ephesians 3:2–3a, 5–6; Matthew 2:1–12For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundMany people know the Christmas story better than nearly any other. You may wish to have the young people read aloud Luke’s and Mathew’s accounts of the Nativity as they did in last week’s lesson. The more they encounter the story of Jesus’birth, the better able they will be to faithfully share it with others. Also in this combined lesson, the Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the search for God in the natural world. The three Magi know the stars. Their search symbolizes the human search for God and for the purpose of human life.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“The Incarnation is...the mystery of the wonderful union of the divine and human natures in the one person of the Word” (CCC, 483). “Christ enables us to live in him all that he himself lived, and he lives it in us. ‘By his Incarnation, he, the Son of God, has in a certain way united himself with each man’” (CCC, 521, quoting Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the Modern World, 22 2).“The Epiphany is the manifestation of Jesus as Messiah of Israel, Son of God and Saviour of the world.... The magi’s coming to Jerusalem in order to pay homage to the king of the Jews shows that they seek in Israel, in the messianic light of the star of David, the one who will be king of the nations” (CCC, 528,).Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
