December 24, 2017 • 4th Sunday of AdventSunday Readings: 2 Samuel 7:1–5, 8b–12, 14a, 16; Romans 16:25–27; Luke 1:26–38For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThe angel Gabriel baffles Mary by announcing to her, “you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus”(Luke 1:31). Mary hears God’s call to become the mother of God’s Son while she is still a girl. She is betrothed to Joseph but still a virgin. She raises a question about how she can possibly bear a son. She trusts the angel Gabriel’s assurance that the Spirit of God will overshadow her. She trusts God. She makes room within herself for the Spirit to work and bring this child to birth.Mary, the Mother of God, stands at a critical point in the history of God’s plan. From the beginning, all Creation has shown forth God’s creative love. In Israel’s history, God shows love through freeing the people from slavery in Egypt, making a covenant with them, and establishing David’s throne forever. In Jesus, we see God’s love showing forth in someone like us. Mary’s yes sets in motion the full revelation of God’s love for us in Jesus.Connecting Scripture and Doctrine“In the fullness of time the Holy Spirit completes in Mary all the preparations for Christ’s coming among the People of God. By the action of the Holy Spirit in her, the Father gives the world Emmanuel, ‘God-with-us’” (CCC, 744). “At the announcement that she would give birth to ‘the Son of the Most High’ without knowing man, by the power of the Holy Spirit, Mary responded with the obedience of faith, certain that ‘with God nothing will be impossible’.... She gave herself entirely to the person and to the work of her Son” (CCC, 494).Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
