They wonder if John is the promised Messiah, or the prophet Elijah, who is supposed to return before the Messiah, or a prophet and lawgiver like Moses. John is certain who he is—a voice preparing the way for the One among the people whom no one yet recognizes.Sunday’s First Reading comes from the prophet whose words form a third installment in the Book of Isaiah. This prophet speaks of God’s nearness to the people who were trying to rebuild their community in the 400s b.c. Jesus is the Spirit- lled one the prophet describes who will come to free his people. His identity is crucial for Christians, for we accept in Baptism the work of allowing his identity to transform our own. We accept the call to let Jesus’ values shape us and to join Jesus in serving others.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineVisions explores Israel’s prophets, John the Baptist, and ways young people can be prophets today. “‘There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.’ John was ‘ lled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb’ by Christ himself, whom the Virgin Mary had just conceived by the Holy Spirit ” (CCC, 717). “From the beginning to the end of time, whenever God sends his Son, he always sends his Spirit: their mission is conjoined and inseparable” (CCC, 743).Materialsl Visions Student Lesson for 12/17l Catechism handbook, page 10l CD player and Venture/Visions CDsl Pencils/pens, markers/colored pencils,Bible, cloth, candle, matches/lighter, Advent wreath, yarn/string, small branches, scissors to create optional mobile or Jesse tree (also make extra copies of page 6)Suggested Musicl “We Are Called” (CD-2, #12)l “Word of Truth and Life” (CD-1, #1)Lesson Resourcesl Visions Activity Book, Activity #6l Lesson Assessment (gospelweeklies.com/assessments)Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
