December 10, 2017 • 2nd Sunday of AdventSunday Readings: Isaiah 40:1–5, 9–11; 2 Peter 3:8–14; Mark 1:1–8For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundIn Sunday’s readings, John the Baptist and the prophet of Israel’s Exile, Second Isaiah, call us to turn from sin, fear, and discouragement toward love, freedom, and forgiveness. The people of Jesus’ time hear John the Baptist echoing the preaching of Second Isaiah, who, 500 years earlier, claimed God was opening a way home from exile just as God opened the dry path through the sea during the Exodus from Egypt. Mark’s Gospel calls us to faith that Jesus opens a way where there had been no way—through death to life.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineThis week’s Visions lesson features an Advent play about “the way of the Lord,” a symbol that runs through the history of the People of Israel. It is the dry path through the sea, the smooth way home from exile, the path through death to life.John the Baptist plays a similar role. “St. John the Baptist is the Lord’s immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way. ‘Prophet of the Most High,’ John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last” (CCC, 523). “John is ‘Elijah [who] must come.’The re of the Spirit dwells in him and makes him the forerunner of the coming Lord. In John, the precursor, the Holy Spirit completes the work of ‘ [making] ready a people prepared for the Lord’” (CCC, 718).Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
