December 3, 2017 • 1st Sunday of AdventSunday Readings: Isaiah 63:16b–17,19b; 64:2–7; 1 Corinthians 1:3–9; Mark 13:33–37For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThe promise of Jesus’ Second Coming fills our futures with hope rather than fear. Sunday’s Gospel reminds us that we don’t know when this great day will be. We do know that Jesus will always be with us until the day of his return. Jesus tells a parable about what servants do when their master goes away and leaves them with crucial work while he is gone but doesn’t specify a time when he will return. Jesus wants his listeners to weigh and evaluate the values on which they act so they will be watchful, ready, and faithful servants upon his return.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineVisions features a young woman’s experience in a tornado. By paying attention to warnings and being prepared for bad weather, her family is saved from tragedy. “When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Saviour’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming” (CCC, 524). “The Church ‘in the course of the year,... unfolds the whole mystery of Christ from his Incarnation and Nativity through his Ascension, to Pentecost and the expectation of the blessed hope of the coming of the Lord’” (CCC, 1194, quoting Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 102 2).Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions for how to present the lesson.
