November 26, 2017 • Feast of Christ the KingSunday Readings: Ezekiel 34:11–12, 15 -17; 1 Corinthians 15:20–26, 28; Matthew 25:31–46For Catechists and TeachersScripture BackgroundThis Sunday, we hear Jesus’ great parable of judgment. The Works of Mercy describe very clearly what people must do to build God’s Kingdom on Earth and to share in it for eternity. We must care for the least of God’s children by seeing that everyone has sufficient food and drink, clothing and shelter, comfort and companionship to live a fully human life. Here, in this powerful Gospel, Jesus reveals the single requirement for being part of his kingdom—love of neighbor—a love he also equates with love of himself.Connecting Scripture and DoctrineRecall the story in Venture about the school and parish in Iowa that joined Mary’s Meals to provide both food and an education to children at risk. Another school raised money for children with cancer and their families. Perhaps your school or parish has done something similar.“The works of mercy are charitable actions by which we come to the aid of our neighbors in their spiritual and bodily necessities. Instructing, advising, consoling, comforting are spiritual works of mercy, as are forgiving and bearing wrongs patiently. The corporal works of mercy consist especially in feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked, visiting the sick and imprisoned, and burying the dead” (CCC, 2447). “On the last day Jesus will say, ‘Truly I say to you, what you did for the least of these my brethren, you did it to me’” (CCC, 678). “At the end of time, the Kingdom of God will come in its fullness. Then the just will reign with Christ forever... ” (CCC, 1060).Single-Session Lesson Pacing GuidesNote: These pacing guides are suggestions on how to present the lesson.
