December 10, 2017 • 2nd Sunday of AdventCatholic Faith Word l Sin (page 5) Read aloud the de nition to introduce the Our Catholic Faith feature. Ask: How could the actions of T.J. and Tom be regarded as sins? Our Catholic Faith l When We Sin, We Miss the Mark (page 5) Have the children read this page aloud. Afterward, divide them into small groups to complete the activity in the tablets. Take this opportunity to make sure the children know the Ten Commandments.Live the GospelObjectives l The children will:l Recognize sin is a decision to turn away from God.l Role-play actions that will straighten the way for Jesus to come into their hearts.Living the Gospel l Make a Straight Road (pages 6-7) Read aloud the introductory text on the top of the page which helps connect this activity and the Sunday Gospel. Follow these steps to help the children act out each dilemma:l Read the rst dilemma, “The Party,” aloud as a class. Identify the problem, Mina’s alternatives, and what might happen next in the story. Decide as a group which solution will be best and why.l Divide into two groups, one for each of the dilemmas on page 7.l Each group reads the dilemma and plans a way to act out the situation and two di erent solutions. The other group votes on which solution is the best. Discuss what was realistic about each group’s role play.Saints l Saint Jane Frances de Chantal (page 8) Saint Jane is a woman who rose up to answer the needs of her time. Encourage the children to read more about her. Her decision to leave her wealth behind to care for the poor and su ering is a good follow up to the Works of Mercy lesson two weeks ago.Closing Prayer If you were not able to celebrate the Reconciliation Prayer Service in last week’s Venture, use it to conclude today’s lesson. Remind the children to keep up with their Advent calendar and with the choices they made to get their hearts ready for Jesus’ coming. If you have already celebrated this prayer service, turn to page 56 in the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and pray the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi. Share with the children that being a peacemaker—the call of this prayer—is to be a person who seeks reconciliation in all situations.Remind the children to share their Gospel Weeklies with their families and to do the With My Family and Friends activities and prayer together.Lesson Wrap-UpNovember 12, 201732nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year AName:Answer the following questions based on the lesson.1. These laws freed them to make a covenant with God. They would be God’s People. The rst three commandments taught them——and us——how to honor God.Using the words in the word bank, fill in the blanks to complete the first three commandments. Choose one of the three and tell how you live it out.Activity 244024_VN_AB_corrected_proof_V3.indd 427/16/17 10:33 PMGod name holy not Lord’s remembershall strange vain1. Why is that a venial sin? Why is it dangerous to commit venial sins like taking small things or lying? If your school or parish has planned a time for the Sacrament of Reconciliation during Advent, suggest that reading this section in the handbook again might be a good way to prepare for receiving the Sacrament. We confess venial sins because we want God’s help in overcoming these tendencies in our lives.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Venture, page 5.With My Family and Friends© 2018 Pflaum Publishing Group, a division of Bayard, Inc.
