November 26, 2017 • Feast of Christ the KingTurn to the two doctrine questions (page 4). The first question should be pretty easy for the children to answer; however, you want to make sure that they’veinternalized this Sunday’s Gospel message: If you love God, you love his people. For the second question, encourage the children to think of two things they are going to do this week. Have them refer back to the Gospel on the top of the page for ideas based on the Works of Mercy.Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks.discuss Jesus’ coming again at the end of time. Make sure the children can pronounce the word.Live the GospelObjectives l The children will:l Play a game based on the Works of Mercy.l Learn about the life of Saint Brigid of Kildare.Living the Gospel l The Works of Mercy Game (pages 6–7) This Sunday’s Gospel is quite clear aboutJesus’ criteria for his followers—care for the least among you. This activity gives children the opportunity to reflect on these practices over and over again in a game format. They will talk about them, remember them, and, with guidance, practice them. Read the directions aloud together. Make sure each child modifies his or her game board by drawing specific ways to practice a Work of Mercy in the building shapes. When play is over, discuss which of the Works of Mercy is easiest for children to do. Which can they do with their families or parish/school?Saints l Saint Brigid of Kildare (page 8) Give the children time to read the comic on their own. Ask the children how Saint Brigid lived the Works of Mercy.Closing Prayer Thanksgiving is celebrated in the United States on Thursday, November 23, this year. Whether you will complete this lesson before or after the holiday, prayers of thanksgiving are always appropriate. Go around the room, having each child complete the prayer, “Loving God, thank you for _________.”When everyone has responded, close the prayer: Loving God, may we always keep thankful hearts and speak grateful words. All respond: Amen.Lesson Wrap-Up4024_VN_AB_corrected_proof_V3.indd 45 7/16/17 10:33 PMVisit gospelweeklies.com/assessments to download this week’s lesson review.Use Activity #27 from the Venture Activity Book as a take- home activity or lesson wrap-up.Unit 2: We Celebrate Jesus’ Coming lWHAT THE CHURCH BELIEVES AND TEACHES HANDBOOKWhat the Church Believes and TeachesThe Corporal Works of Mercy (page 50)The Spiritual Works of Mercy (page 50)Distribute the children’s What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and have them turn to page 50. Find the list of the Corporal Works of Mercy.Explain that corporal comes from the Latin word corpus, which means body. These are acts of love that help people who need food, shelter, water—things our bodies need to survive and thrive. These are the ones we heard in the Gospel today.Move to the section on the Spiritual Works of Mercy. Ask the children to read them aloud. Ask for examples of how people do spiritual Works of Mercy for each other. This list does not come directly from Jesus, but it has been taught by the Church for a very long time.Turn back briefly to page 49. Read aloud together The Great Commandment. The children will remember this from the lesson for October 26. In that lesson, they read about the Swish for Kids basketball tournament. Make the connection between doing the Works of Mercy and keeping God’s Great Commandment to love him and love one’s neighbor.Have the children close the What the Church Believes and Teaches handbooks and return to Venture, page 5.November 12, 201732nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Year AName:Answer the following questions based on the lesson.1.
